Festbier / Wiesnbier

Festbier is the modern “Oktoberfestbier” served at the official Oktoberfest in Germany, which is run by the Munich city council. Before the 1990s, the beer at the festival was the rich, malty Märzen that everyone loved. But Festbier has since taken over – a light, golden beer, similar to Export Helles (but stronger and more flavorful). Paulaner Brauerei created the style in the mid-1970s, hoping to make it “easier to drink.” Festbier has a clean body, rich malt flavor, light hop aroma, and “carefree” drinking ability. Other names for Festbier include Wiesnbier, Wies’n, or Wiesn – the Munich name for Oktoberfest, based on the Theresienwiese (the festival grounds). Note, Festbier is not Weissbier, Weißbier or Weizenbier (wheat beer).
