Baltic Porter

By the late 18th century, Porters were considerably stronger than today’s standards, often exceeding 7% ABV. Some British brewers developed a stronger, fuller-bodied version for export across the North Sea, called **Baltic Porter**. The dark brown colour of this beer helped to mask the haze, and the roasted malts, smoke and bitterness helped to mask the imperfections of the brewing process. Historically, Porters were also blended with stale ales to add a pleasant acidity, which is what made the style so popular. These characteristics were important as breweries began to move from pub-style to industrial-scale production for global export.
