I had it all – or so I thought. But then one day, everything came crashing down like dominoes. My job slipped away, my lover left without a word, and my friends disappeared like morning mist.

I wandered aimlessly in the night, in the bitter cold of December in Quebec. The wind whistled through the empty streets, my worn-out coat not enough to keep the last bit of warmth of my faith. I didn’t know how long I walked, until I saw the dim light of an old bar, quietly located on a nameless street corner. …and I met Maudite.

The wooden door creaked as I pushed it open. It was warmer inside, but the emptiness in my heart was still cold. I sat down at the bar, didn’t order anything, just kept quiet. The old bartender, probably used to people carrying heavy burdens, didn’t ask much, just placed a glass of beer as red as blood in front of me – “Maudite,” he said.

I looked at the beer, it glistened in the dim yellow light. A strange feeling welled up in me – as if something was calling me back from the depths of despair. I took a sip. And I was no longer the same person I had been a few seconds before.

1. The Story of Maudite in the Legendary Years

Maudite's story begins with Unibroue – brewery founded in 1990 in Quebec by businessman André Dion et al. They didn't take the easy route. They took the bottle-conditioned fermentation technique – a tradition from Belgian monasteries – and mixed it with Quebec folk spirit.

1992, Maudite was born – Unibroue's first Dubbel, rich, layered in flavour and daring to tell a story like no other: the legend of La Chasse-Galerie – the souls who make a deal with the devil to fly back at night.

From the very first batches, Unibroue showed its distinct personality: using the bottle-conditioned fermentation technique – a classic method that allows the beer’s flavor to continue to develop over time like an old wine. Maudite, launched in 1992, was one of their first and most daring children.

Inspired by La Chasse-Galerie legend – a mystical tale of night-time boatmen making a pact with the devil – Maudite is not just a beer, but a symphony of history, faith and personality. This is a Dubbel in the truest sense: classic, profound, like the chants of an ancient monastery. But in that yeast, there is something else – a little rebellious, a little eccentric and an invitation to step into another world. – a brewery founded in 1990 in Quebec, Canada – whose mission is to combine the Belgian abbey beer tradition with the folk spirit of Canada’s identity.

Unibroue stands out not only for its bottle-conditioned fermentation technique – a technique that requires patience and passion – but also for its philosophy of brewing beer as storytelling: every drop is an epic chapter. And Maudite is their boldest, most magical and profound chapter yet.

It is Dubbelian in style – classical, profound, like the chants of an ancient monastery. But in Maudite, there is also rebellion, like the curse in the legend of La Chasse-Galerie – the flying boat that carries the souls of those who dare to defy fate.

2. When the Night Smells Like Orange and Caramel

Maudite is a typical representative of the style. Belgian-style Dubbel, first introduced by Unibroue in 1992. This is a strong beer with alcohol concentration 8%, aimed at drinkers seeking an experience full of depth and personality.

Maudite has a deep amber color, shimmering with copper under the dim light of a bar or cozy dinner. The fine white foam on the beer surface is like a layer of morning dew, delicate and inviting. When you bring the glass to your nose, you will feel the rich aroma - a harmonious combination of ripe orange, sweet caramel malt and a little bit of spicy like nutmeg or clove.

The palate is a journey of evolution: a sweet opening, bursting with dried fruit, followed by a dense malty structure, and finally a slightly spicy finish with a warm lingering finish. The mouthfeel is rich and full-bodied, but never heavy – a delicate balance between power and grace.

Bottle-conditioned, Maudite continues to develop its flavours even after it is bottled, offering a dynamic experience over time like a vintage wine. This makes each bottle a unique edition, especially for those who love to explore flavours from season to season, year to year.

Maudite is not a beer to be drunk in a hurry. It is for slow evenings, for moments that need to be calmed, and for those who believe that in every glass, there is a piece of memory – or a ray of hope.

The deep amber red color of Maudite evokes a sense of luxury and mystery. When brought to the nose, the aroma of ripe orange blends with caramel malt and a little spice, opening up a very unique emotional space. The taste of the beer when touching the tongue is a balance between sweet, slightly spicy and warm in the aftertaste, like a tight embrace on a cold day.

With its full body, smooth head and ability to develop flavours over time thanks to bottle fermentation, Maudite is more than a beer – it’s an experience. A beer for those who want more than just a yeast – they want a story, a journey.

3. The Art of Appreciation Maudite

To fully appreciate the spirit of Maudite, don't drink it like a regular beer. Treat it with the same respect you would a glass of aged wine. The goblet or chalice will help the complex aromas to fully unfold – from ripe oranges to caramel and hints of spice.

The ideal temperature to enjoy is from 10–12°C, which helps to highlight the balance between sweet and spicy, without losing the depth of the rich glaze. A chilly evening, soft yellow candlelight, some jazz music or the crackling of a fire – that is the ideal space for Maudite to tell her story.

As for the side dish, let its rich flavor complement it:

  • Grilled meat: beef ribs, lamb, or charred pork – the fat meets the spiciness to awaken your taste buds.
  • Strong cheese: like Munster or Stilton – combinations that offer interesting depth and contrast.
  • Spicy food: like tandoori chicken, Indian beef stew or Middle Eastern dishes – the aromas will embrace each other like a harmony of East and West.

4. Honoring a Canadian Beer Icon

Although not named on the podium, Maudite still stands alongside legends like La Fin du Monde, Don de Dieu, or Trois Pistoles – names that have etched Unibroue on the world beer map. But it is Maudite’s rebellious personality, deep structure and unpredictable emotions that make it the red gem in Unibroue’s collection – quietly but unforgettable.

To date, Unibroue has been honored with over 400 international awards, making this Quebec-based brewery a symbol of quality and innovation in the craft beer world. And in that aura, Maudite quietly contributes with its own rebellious personality and mysterious depth.

5. Conclusion: Thank you, Maudite

That night, I didn’t seek advice, nor did I expect anyone to save me. I just needed a reason not to fall again. And Maudite, as quiet as the dim light in that old bar, gave me a reason – it didn’t have to be big, just enough to keep me from the edge.

If anyone ever said a beer couldn't change their life, they probably never drank Maudite on a desperate night.

If anyone ever said that a beer can’t change your life, they probably never drank Maudite on a desperate night. Because sometimes, it’s not something great, but a sip of spicy yeast, a bitter sweetness and a little warmth in the throat – that can revive a broken soul.

Thank you Maudite – not for saving me, but for being there, when I needed something… or someone. And if you’re lost in the dark, just sit back, raise your glass, and listen. Maybe you’ll find yourself too – with each sip of Maudite.
