Abbey

A Belgian abbey beer, often brewed in the Trappist style by commercial breweries rather than monks. There are many variations – from the light Blonde, to the full-bodied Dubbel, to the crisp Tripel, to the powerful Quadrupel – but they all share a common theme: full body, distinctive Belgian yeast aromas, and rich fruit and spice flavors. Special yeasts create fruity esters (banana, pear, plum) and spicy phenols (clove, pepper), combined with a sweet malty flavor and a high but balanced alcohol content.
