Finnish Sahti is a very old traditional Finnish beer style, considered one of the oldest beers in Northern Europe. It is typically brewed using artisanal methods and is unfiltered, resulting in a slightly cloudy appearance and a very distinctive flavor.
An interesting aspect of Sahti is its frequent use of juniper berries instead of hops, or a very light hop blend. This creates a herbaceous, woody, and somewhat pine-forest-like aroma.
Sahti beer typically has a full-bodied and distinct malty flavor, reminiscent of ripe bananas, bread, and honey, thanks to its traditional yeast strain, similar to hefeweizen. Despite its potentially high alcohol content, Sahti still offers a smooth and well-rounded taste.
