Belgian Dark Ale is a group of Belgian ales with a deep amber to dark brown color, characterized by rich malt flavors, ripe fruit, and sometimes a hint of mild spice from the yeast.
When you drink it, you'll typically taste flavors like caramel, toasted bread, light chocolate, along with notes of dried fruit such as raisins, plums, or berries. These aromas mainly come from Belgian yeast, a very well-known characteristic of Belgian beer styles.
Despite its dark color and rather intense flavor, Belgian Dark Ale retains a smooth and well-rounded taste, is not overly bitter, and often has a slightly warm aftertaste from the alcohol.
