Have you ever felt an unnamed longing, a longing not for water, but for a lush tropical garden that could embrace your taste buds? For a sunset hue melting in your hand, carrying the sweet scent of dragon fruit and the subtle tartness of passion fruit? There is such a sweet and enchanting flow hidden within a small container, named... Medusa – Dragon Fruit & Passion Fruit from Mortalis Brewing Co.
She arrives not like a glass of beer, but like an invitation to a world of dreams. There, the boundary between drink and art becomes as fragile as mist. Each sip is a journey back to the sun-drenched tropics, where the delicate acidity gently awakens the senses, and the natural sweetness of fresh fruit embraces your soul like a soothing melody. This is not just a taste experience, but an encounter of emotions, nurtured within the philosophy of "ordinary people" creating extraordinary things. Let us guide you on this journey to discover its captivating beauty.
1. The Mortal Journey and the Divine Nectar Dream
The most beautiful stories often begin with a friendship. Mortalis Brewing Co. Similarly, it was conceived and brought to life by two friends – Matt Gordon and Kurt Hadley. They not only share a passion, but also a shared aspiration: to create extraordinary drops of nectar right here in this mundane world.
In 2017, that dream began to blossom, humble and full of challenges. They started as a contract craft brewer, their first batches of beer brewed and produced at Neighborhood Mystery In Rochester. Those were the first shaky steps of a brand that didn't yet have its own home, but already possessed an indomitable spirit.
Then July 2018 marked a sacred turning point. The doors of the taproom and factory at 7501 State Route 96, Avon, New York, opened. It was not just an address, but a home for creativity. And from the very beginning, Mortalis chose its own unique and captivating path: New England IPA with its ethereal, captivating, and unique beauty Smoothie Sour Ale – a drink where the line between beer and fruit smoothie becomes incredibly blurred.
Success is a sweet wave. From 2020 to the present, they have grown steadily, expanding their breweries and taking their colorful bottles to new heights. Each time a new variant in the series is launched, the craft beer community eagerly awaits it, like waiting for a work of art to be revealed.

1.1. The Name and Mythical Power
Mortalis – a name derived from ancient Latin, meaning mortal, earthly being. Perhaps, hidden behind that name is a beautiful and humble philosophy? They wanted to create things so amazing, things that could make us feel as if we were touching the divine realm, yet still accessible to everyone, for the most ordinary moments of life. And then, when we raise our glasses, we feel cherished.
And if the name is the soul, then the logo is the manifested power. The images of Medusa and Hydra from Greek mythology are not only symbols of difference and strength, but also a subtle declaration: anyone who dares to look directly at their creation risks being "petrified" by its allure.
1.2. Medusa: A Gaze That Turns Stone with the Scent of Fruit
And then, from within that creative flow, the Medusa series was born – as the most powerful gorgon goddess in Mortalis' collection. This Smoothie Sour Ale series embodies generosity and boldness: a massive amount of pureed fruit is sacrificed, transforming each sip of beer into a thick, hazy smoothie, with rich fruit flavors and a delicate balance of sour and sweet.
Medusa – Dragon Fruit And Passion Fruit It is a magnificent offspring of the Medusa lineage. It was born to cater to adventurous souls, those seeking to break free from tradition and immerse themselves in the tropical world of dragon fruit and passion fruit. Its approachable flavor and unique texture make it the perfect messenger, guiding even those new to the world of craft beer.
You ask when it was released? It's hard to answer, because Mortalis is like an artist constantly refreshing its palette. The Medusa variations appear in limited-edition releases, like fleeting light shows that, if missed, will leave you regretting not waiting. Instead of a specific timeframe, think of it as the brainchild of a booming Fruited Sour trend. It was born from a desire for exploration, from the belief that tropical fruits and yeast could together create a captivating, sweet, and haunting poem.

2. Smoothie Sour Ale: A Misty Liquid That Melts in Your Throat
Call her by her proper name, with all due respect: Smoothie Sour Ale. The name itself is a sweet and tangy love song, a promise of an experience that transcends conventional definitions of beer. She is a vibrant, contemporary, and bold branch of the Fruited Sour Ale family. If Ale is a forest, then Smoothie Sour is the exotic flower blooming in the woods, dazzlingly enchanting, forcing all old rules to yield.
2.1. Features: A Smoothie That Whispers
Color Her is a watercolor painting created by ripe fruits themselves. The colors are not fixed, but entirely dependent on the fruits used – a proud declaration of originality. With the Dragon Fruit & Passion Fruit variant, you'll see a delicate pink, a dreamy pale purple, or a captivating tropical reddish-pink. But what lingers at first glance is her sensual, hazy opacity. She's not crystal clear, but smooth and opaque like a freshly blended smoothie, even glistening with gently settled fruit pulp at the bottom – a sensual invitation.
Alcohol content (ABV 4%) It's a refined choice. It's as gentle as a summer breeze, perfectly suited to its refreshing and easy-to-drink nature. You can enjoy it as a thirst-quenching beverage without worrying about being overwhelmed.
Bitterness? Oh, forget it. The IBU here is practically zero. Hops are almost absent from this game, as the stage is reserved for two stars: the naturally crisp acidity and the sweet, explosive fruit flavors. This is a symphony without bitter undertones, only melodious sweet and sour chords.
And then, Body of the beer That's the magic. This is the characteristic that makes the hearts of countless admirers flutter. Her body is full, thick, and slightly viscous, just like the feel of a high-end smoothie. When it touches the palate, she is incredibly smooth and creamy. The generosity of the fruit puree, along with perhaps the embrace of lactose or oatmeal, creates a rich, full-bodied texture. You won't find the dryness or lightness of traditional beer. Here, there is only a sweet, lingering embrace.
2.2. The Difference: A Unique Goddess
She was unlike anyone else. It was that uniqueness that gave her her aura. Compared to others... Traditional Sour Ale (Gose, Berliner Weisse), she is noticeably gentler and sweeter. But what truly sets her apart is her opaque, dense figure – a stark contrast to the delicate, translucent appearance of her predecessors.
And despite sharing a similar hazy appearance with New England IPA, These two women spoke different languages. The New England IPA whispered with the bitterness of hops and the tropical aroma of flowers. And she, Smoothie Sour Ale, simply hummed the sweet and tangy melody of fresh fruit, untouched by bitterness.

And don't confuse her with... Cream Ale Although both have a creamy texture, Cream Ale is gentle with its sweet, rich flavor from corn and rice, while Cream Ale is a more sentimental muse, with a foundation of fresh acidity and a tropical burst of fruit.
That's her, Smoothie Sour Ale – a captivating creation that blurs all boundaries, leaving only an authentic experience that directly touches the emotions.
