I don’t think I’ll ever go back to beer. Not after those long nights sitting alone in the cold kitchen, my glass half empty but my heart full. She left on a late summer afternoon, leaving a void deeper than any sinkhole I’d ever fallen into. I still loved her, that never changed, even when the last song stopped playing.

I found Maximus Colossal IPA in a deserted bar in Petaluma. An old friend – not a person, but a sip of a strong, warm beer, bringing back the feeling I thought I had lost forever. It wasn’t the alcohol that made me drunk, but the feeling of being held in the arms of something strong and gentle, fierce and understanding to the core.

There are no words to fully describe the way that alcohol concentration 9% belong to Maximus Colossal IPA touch the cracks in my heart. There is no way to hide the fact that sometimes, what seems so strong is what we need the most to stand up.

This beer doesn't scream. It whispers with aroma. Simcoe, Cascade and Centennial hops, whispered in the aftertaste caramel and lemongrass. It doesn't comfort you like a promise, but like a hug from someone you've lost – tight, rough, but true.

I don't drink beer to forget her. I drink Maximus Colossal IPA to remember why i once knew how to love something to the end.

1. The Journey From Lagunitas To The “Super Arrogant” IPA Project

In 1993, in the heart of bustling California, a man named Tony Magee started brewing in the garage. It wasn’t a glamorous start-up, but quiet late nights with kettles, malts, and yeasty dreams. From those hand-brewed batches, Lagunitas Brewing Company born in a small town Lagunitas in Marin County, carrying the aspiration to redefine what a unique, unconventional beer is.

After just one year, Lagunitas must move to Petaluma, not far away, because demand far exceeds supply. Here, Tony and his team have constantly experimented, breaking the limits and prejudices of the market. They don't just brew beer, they brew a lifestyle: liberal, rebellious, but full of emotion. With unconventional names like Lagunitas IPA, Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale, and especially Maximus, they built an empire of bold and uncompromising IPAs.

A bird's-eye view of Lagunitas Brewing in Petaluma – where uncompromising IPA dreams are born.

In 2015, when Heineken International bought 50% shares of Lagunitas, the craft beer community was shocked. Partly because of fear that Lagunitas would lose its “quality”, partly because of disbelief that an independent producer full of personality would choose to enter the global playing field. But Tony is still Tony. Even after that Heineken buying the rest in 2017, he affirmed: “We will still be us, just with wings to fly further.”

That is proven by the fact that Lagunitas continue to create beer lines full of personality, including Maximus Colossal IPA – a more mature, powerful version of the original Maximus. This is more than a formula. This is the voice of those who were rejected for being too rebellious, too bold, too much for the mass market to accept.

And even though taproom in Chicago closed in August 2024 to focus on Petaluma, the Lagunitas spirit has never waned. In every bottle Maximus Colossal IPA, still has the rebellious DNA, the breath of live music nights in warehouses, beer tastings at the old wooden bar, and the heart of a Tony Magee who taught himself to make beer because he couldn't find what he wanted to drink.

If there is a journey that makes every sip of beer a story, it is the journey of Lagunitas. And Maximus Colossal IPA is the climax chapter of that story.

2. The “Supernormal” Flavor of Maximus Colossal IPA

It's not often you come across a beer that makes you stop after the first sip and stay quiet for a few seconds, just to take it in. Maximus Colossal IPA does it – not with flourish, but with instinct. This is a beer that doesn’t wait for you to adjust, it enters your mouth like a storm survivor – fierce, intense and truly unforgettable.

Imperial IPA Style is a playground not for the hesitant. And in that world, Maximus Colossal IPA is the guy without a helmet. With ABV 9% and IBU about 60, it doesn't hide its power. It lets you taste every layer of flavor as if tracing the trail of something lost.

Flavor Journey:

  • Nose: Smell citrus, tangerine peel, bit young pine and faintly burnt caramel – like the smell of a late autumn afternoon.
  • Taste: Citrus, lemongrass, dark caramel malt – initially bright, then quickly turns slightly spicy, dry and sharp like an unsaid farewell.
  • Mouth feel: Thick, full-bodied but not heavy. A strange balance of fat, stickiness and just the right amount of carbonation, making you want to keep it in your mouth longer, like holding onto a melting memory.

The contribution of the trio cannot be ignored. Simcoe, Cascade and Centennial hops – aromatic and refined warriors, bringing complexity to every sip. But all would be for naught without malted wheat, Munich malt and English Crystal Malt, the gentle, smoldering, fermenting layers of nameless nostalgia.

This isn't a beer you drink casually at a party. This is a beer you drink when you need to have a conversation with yourself. A beer that's not just bitter from the hops, but also bitter from memories, brewed well and served as a liquid, shimmering amber.

3. How to Enjoy Maximus Colossal IPA Correctly

There is no esoteric ritual. But there are ways to make every sip Maximus Colossal IPA hits the emotional nerve it was meant to evoke. A beer like this deserves to be enjoyed with all its respect and attention.

3.1 Ideal Temperature

Best from 10 to 13°C. Too cold and you’ll lose the underlying caramel flavour. Too warm and the bitterness can overwhelm everything else. Keep it cool enough to retain the full body, but warm enough to give the memories that linger in each sip a chance to surface.

3.2 Suitable Drinking Glasses

Select tulip cup or sniffer, where the narrow mouth of the glass helps to collect the aroma, allowing you to fully experience the layers of hops. The traditional pint glass is fine, but if you want to take the experience to the next level – choose your glass like you choose your companion: less, but right.

3.3 Ideal Timing

Not prime time TV. Not in the middle of a crowded party. Maximus Colossal IPA best suited for late nights, when you're awake and the world is asleep. Or on a leisurely afternoon, when the late afternoon light is soft enough to look into your beer and see what you used to be.

3.4 Combination Dishes

  • Blue cheese: The rich, salty flavor will bring out the hidden sweetness in the caramel malt.
  • Grilled ribs with mild spicy BBQ sauce: Umami resonates perfectly with a dry bitter aftertaste.

  • Dark chocolate: A little bitter after dinner? Why not, as it pushes the beer's aftertaste in a surprising way.

3.5 Personal Moments

Don't just drink it, live it. Let some instrumental music play in the background, or just the sound of the wind, the city, or yourself. Maximus Colossal IPA It doesn't require you to understand it, but if you listen, it will tell you a lot.
