I remember that early winter night vividly, in the small workshop beside the old windmill, the charcoal brazier still glowing red, smoldering like the very breath of the batches of beer we were watching over. The wind outside blew through the cracks in the wooden door, making it creak dryly, but inside, the air was thick with the smell of roasted malt, a hint of smoke, and the warm aroma of alcohol that has embraced my mind for so many years.
Back then, I was young. My hands weren't calloused like they are now, but my heart was full of dreams. We sat silently together, the only sounds being the crackling of wood at the bottom of the oven and the ticking of the clock on the wall, waiting for each second of the aging process. Nights like these repeated for years. No one was in a hurry. Because every drop of Stout we would later raise to our lips was the result of a long journey of patience and sleepless nights.
Hel & Verdoemenis – Misto BA. Born from those memories, each layer of oak, vanilla, and bourbon aroma, each rich, dark beer, is something you don't just drink, but savor. For me, each glass of Stout is not simply a finished product. It's a slice of memory. A part of my life that I've distilled with all my pride and love for my craft.
1. Footprints of Time: The Journey of Brouwerij De Molen
I still vividly remember the first day I stepped inside the De Arkduif windmill, a structure built in 1697 in Bodegraven. There, amidst the whistling wind through old wooden fans and the clicking of handcrafted machines, I – a beer enthusiast – began the bold journey of my life. 2004. I don't have the backing of a giant beer corporation, nor do I intend to chase market trends. I simply want to brew honest, strong beers that truly reflect the passion burning within me.
From day one, I told myself: let the beer speak for me.. And indeed, it was that honesty and uncompromising character that helped Brouwerij De Molen, My brainchild has become the pride of the Dutch craft beer community and has been embraced by beer connoisseurs around the world.

From the small space of an old windmill, the first batches of beer were born. I've been constantly experimenting, from rich, bold Stouts and sharp IPAs to innovative versions. Barrel-Aged It's incredibly complex. My small team and I weren't afraid to experiment with aging beer in all sorts of barrels: bourbon, whisky, rum, even barrels that once held red wine or sherry. Each attempt was a tense wait, sometimes lasting a whole year, just to create the most perfect version possible, even if the production was only a few hundred bottles each season.
And then, the results came. Brouwerij De Molen quickly crossed the Dutch border, reach out to Europe and the world. Many prestigious rankings have named us among the top 6 breweries globally, something I never dared to dream of when I started.
In 2019, I made a big decision: to partner with Swinkels Family Brewers. Many worried that this would be the end for a brewery with a craft spirit, but for me, it was a step forward that helped us maintain our identity while bringing our passionate beers closer to the world. Despite expanding, I have never compromised the soul of our craft. Brouwerij De Molen, Where it all began with a simple dream inside an old windmill.
For me, Brouwerij De Molen is more than just a brewery. It's a journey of dreams: daring to try, daring to be different, and daring to hold onto one's unique identity to the very end. And amidst the ceaseless flow of time, Hel & Verdoemenis – Misto BA. It emerged as a declaration, profound, bold, and never to be forgotten.
2. Hel & Verdoemenis – Misto BA: The Ultimate Russian Imperial Stout
There are times when I wonder: could a beer really leave people speechless with awe??. Then I looked at the glass. Hel & Verdoemenis – Misto BA. As soon as it's poured, the layer of beer pitch black Like a starless night, where light cannot penetrate, and I know it is possible. Because I myself created it, a symphony of darkness, of depth, of emotions that linger in the end like a long, drawn-out whisper in the mind.
I chose the style. Russian Imperial Stout, Not because it was easy, but because I craved a challenge. This beer was once created to please the Russian royal family, with stringent requirements for alcohol content, thickness, and complexity. I knew I was entering ambitious territory, where only true brewers who understood the principles of patience and attention to detail could leave their mark.

With version Hel & Verdoemenis – Misto BA., I set myself a bolder challenge than anything I'd ever done before. I chose oak barrels that had aged Wild Turkey bourbon, barrels that held the memory of fire and spirit. Inside, each grain of wood had been hand-charred, just enough to awaken hidden aromatic compounds: soft vanilla like morning dew, subtly sweet caramel like the setting sun, and the lingering scent of burnt wood like the warmth remaining in an old charcoal brazier. The process was like a silent dialogue between beer and wood, with me simply standing by, listening, watching, and waiting. There was no room for haste. Because only time could create depth.
As I poured the beer into the glass, I saw the pale brown foam slowly dissipate like a floating cloud. No words were needed, only the gaze of the drinker as they raised the glass to their nose, gently closed their eyes, and fell silent. That was the moment I knew they had touched the first layer of aroma: dark roasted coffee. Next came lightly toasted malt, subtly sweet, with a hint of vanilla. And finally, a warm puff of bourbon smoke, like a glowing ember on a cold winter afternoon.
With alcohol concentration 12%, Everyone thinks Hel & Verdoemenis – Misto BA. It would be a powerful blow to the taste buds. But no. I created it to be as smooth as an ancient wine lying dormant in wooden barrels for years, to be rich but not heavy, to be as silky as a stream of memories flowing through the drinker's chest. Just a small sip, and a warm sensation spreads, slowly and gently. It quietly seeps in, like soft jazz music playing in a rustic wooden room on a windless night.
Hel & Verdoemenis – Misto BA. This is my answer to those who ask: Can craft beer both respect tradition and be boldly innovative? I believe it can. When you dare to stand between tradition and innovation, dare to retain old values but also have the courage to forge new paths, that's where the magic happens. And I stood at that intersection, not to experiment, but to create something that people will remember forever.
Each bottle Hel & Verdoemenis – Misto BA. It's not just a product. It's the waiting of each season, each barrel I carefully selected and inspected, each night I listened intently to the fermentation process in the darkness. It's a part of my heart poured into it. I've come to realize one thing after years of experimentation, Hel & Verdoemenis – Misto BA. It also has its own temperament. But just let it warm up a little, about... 12–14°C, The beer begins to open up, each layer of aroma like a door opening to reveal itself.
I love the moment the slight chill on the glass dissipates, revealing the smooth, dark color of the beer, like a piece of silk. Then comes the soft vanilla, the rich, dark cocoa, like the final brushstroke on a painting I've been waiting for months to complete.

Blue Cheese: The sharp saltiness and deep creaminess of the blue cheese create a perfect flavor combination with the burnt caramel and oak aftertaste in the beer.
BBQ Ribs: The rich, flavorful sauce coating each charred, smoky rib, combined with the tender, juicy meat and the robust beer flavor, creates a rich experience reminiscent of cozy gatherings around a charcoal grill.
Dark chocolate 80% or rich mousse: The subtle bitterness and smooth texture of dark chocolate are the perfect companions to this strong Stout. They blend seamlessly with the beer's body, creating a dark yet captivating symphony.
4. Conclusion: Raising a Glass Amidst Memories
Now, as time has dried my hands and turned my hair gray, I still often return to my old workshop in the twilight hours. It's still the same wooden chair by the charcoal stove, still the same window opening onto the quiet Bodegraven sky. I sit there, pouring myself a glass. Hel & Verdoemenis – Misto BA.
